Joseph Brewer MDDr. Brewer is originally from western Kansas. He attended the University of Kansas for undergraduate education (degree in microbiology) and medical school. He then did a residency in internal medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. Following residency, he did a fellowship in infectious disease at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Brewer returned to Kansas City in 1980 and became the first full-time infectious disease physician at St. Luke’s Hospital. Initially, he practiced with a group of internists at St. Luke’s. In 1988, he founded Plaza Infectious Disease. That practice has remained the infectious disease consulting practice at St. Luke’s since that time. Over the course of 40 years, he has seen a lot of patients and “a little bit of everything.”

He is married and has a son and a daughter. Apart from medicine, he plays golf, swims and enjoys some “winter-time” in Florida every winter.
